Beckman Scholars Program
Undergraduate Research in Chemistry, Biology, and Biological Sciences

Program Dates

Summer 2008 (Tentative): June 2 - August 8, 2008

Research Experiences and Faculty Mentoring
Montana State University was pleased to be awarded a Beckman Scholars Program in 2004 by the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation. The Beckman Scholars Program provides a unique opportunity to participate in an extended, intensive research project, with a participating faculty member (see below), to outstanding undergraduate research students in chemistry, biology, and biological sciences.
 
Student Eligibility
All students currently enrolled in their sophomore or junior year who are enrolled full-time at MSU-Bozeman and studying biology, chemistry, and /or biochemistry.
 
Selection Criteria

Beckman Scholars will be selected according to the following criteria:

Clarity and merit of the research proposal
Student's preparation
Student's academic accomplishments
Candidates potential to become a leader in science
 
Two-Step Application Process
Step One: Faculty Member Sponsor
In order to apply to the Beckman Scholars Program, students must be sponsored by one of the following participating faculty mentors:

Step Two: Application Submittal
Students must submit their application package to the following location:

Application Packet
A student's application packet must include two copies of the following information:
Research Proposal (5 pages)
Application Form
Two Letters of Recommendation (one from the sponsoring faculty mentor)

A Statement of Purpose: Please comment on the following points

- why you want to pursue a research experience

- your career goals

- how this research experience fits into achieving your career goals

- how you see yourself developing into a leader in science

Tiffany Kniepkamp (2005-06 Beckman Scholar) from Circle, Montana obtained a double major in Biochemistry and Biomedicine at MSU and is now pursuing medical school. Her project was entitled: Determination of the Effect of Sprouting on Axonal Morphology"

The Beckman Scholars Program

"Established in 1997, the Beckman Scholars Program is an invited program for accredited universities and four-year colleges in the United States. It provides scholarships that contribute significantly towards advancing the education, research training and personal development of select students in chemistry, biochemistry, and the biological and medical sciences. The sustained, in-depth undergraduate research experiences and comprehensive faculty mentoring are unique in terms of program scope, content, and level of scholarship awards ($19,300 for two summers and one academic year)."
