What Kinds of Travel do We Fund?

  • Travel to  academic and professional conferences
  • Supplemental funding to students whose research involves significant travel expenses
  • We do not provide travel scholarships for study abroad unless the study abroad experience involves a significant, independent research project – these projects must be reviewed and approved through our research grants process

What are the eligibility requirements?

  • For conference travel, students must be presenting or co-presenting  in order to be eligible for funding
  • For supplemental travel funding for research projects, students must apply and have their project approved through our research grants process
  • Students must be enrolled full-time, at undergraduate status during the time of their travel*

*Part-time students or recent graduates who have an opportunity to present on research conducted as an undergraduate may be considered on a case-by-case basis, and should obtain prior approval from the Program Director.  Please contact the USP office for details.

How Do I apply?

  • For conference travel, complete our travel grant application and submit it to the USP office by the appropriate term deadline (see table below).  Please attach a copy of the project abstract you will be presenting/co-presenting.
  • For funding to conduct research that involves travel, students can apply for supplemental travel funding directly on the budget page of our research grants application.  Please see the research grants page for deadlines and instructions.

What is the deadline for travel grant applications?

Deadlines for AY 2013-14 conference travel funding are outlined below.  Applicants will be notified of their funding status within 1 – 2 weeks following submission of their application and associated faculty mentor/departmental approvals.  If you have any questions or concerns about the application schedule, please contact the USP office.

If awarded a travel grant, how will the funding disbursed?

  • To ensure that all departmental approvals are obtained on your travel authorization paperwork, as well as to streamline the approval process, USP will transfer travel grant funding to your home/research department for disbursement.  You will need to work with your mentor and department administrative staff to complete a Travel Authorization Form & associated documents prior to your travel.
  • Funding can either be released to you as an advance (time permitting), a reimbursement for expenses you have covered personally, or reimbursement to your department for any expenses they have paid on your behalf.  Please work with your mentor and department administrative staff to determine the details of your funding disbursement and complete associated documents.  Students who receive USP travel grants are expected to abide by all applicable travel policies set forth by MSU and their home/research department.
