Making new pages using Templates

If you are creating new web pages for your site that currently do not exist, please review the following steps:

  1. Open up your .dwt file in Dreamweaver and update template as necessary for your basic page within your website
  2. Please note: Information within 'editable' instances will be created on the page initially, but will not update if the template is changed later, consider using library items or includes for your navigation and contact us box
  3. Create a new page using File > New > Page from Template (selecting your new template)
  4. Update your new page and save it using the following guidelines:
    • Do not use spaces within your filenames, consider short descriptive file names
    • If your folder has only one file, the one file should be named index.html

Updating pages using Templates

If your current pages are already based on an older template, you should be able to update your pages easily:

  1. Open up your .dwt file in Dreamweaver and update template as necessary for your basic page within your website
  2. Please note: Information within 'editable' instances will be created on new pages initially, but will not update when applying a template if the instance already exists; consider using library items or includes for your navigation and contact us box
  3. Once you are ready to update, open up a current page that is using the dreamweaver template and use Modify > Templates > Apply Template to Page…
  4. Your template may have inconsistencies with older templates and will ask where to put them. For most items you can put them "Nowhere"; items such as Right Side Navigations will need to go to "mainContent". (Also, 'body' will go to 'mainContent' and 'head' will go to 'Nowhere'.) If your template has lost items you wanted to keep, Undo your changes (Edit > Undo) and try again using different settings

The templates are provided for use for pages within the Montana State University Web domain. By using these templates, your page will retain a uniform navigation and style.
