The Task

Imagine that you are a passenger taking a trip on the food train which is traveling through the land of breads and grains. Each internet site that you visit is a "town" where the train is stopping. During the stops you have the chance to visit that area. While here you must gather information and record it in your travel journal. Your journal should include information from the following tasks and at least five interesting facts that you learned on your trip.

  • Today there are many different types of breakfast cereals sold in stores. What must the makers of these cereals do to the grains before they can be made into cereals? What are the three types of cereal they can then make?

  • Look through some of the recipes listed on the sites. You may also use a search engine to find new recipes. Choose one of the recipes which fits into the breads and grains food group. Copy the recipe into your journal and tell why it is part of the breads and grains food group. Now list four other products that you eat that are part of the breads and grains food group.

  • Everyone always seems to be telling us not to eat too much candy. What about breads and grains? Find out how many servings we are supposed to eat daily out of the breads and grains food group.
