TASK

By using the suggested resources, you will have the opportunity to acquire a better understanding of mathematics through the viewpoint of the Italian culture. Please visit the internet sites and read the accounts of the people and events you will find there. You can pretend to travel back in time and imagine yourself as being there and try to experience Italy and the math they used.

PROCESS

Complete two of the four (4) following suggested assignments:

Number 5 is for your pleasure.



    1. From the Guido Castelnuovo site:

      a. Using the information on the website, calculate Guido Castelnuovo's age when he died.

      b. Find Guido Castelnuovo's birth location on the map, then draw or print the map and indicate the location.



    2. From the The Math Forum site:

      a. Why is a circle divided into 360 degrees? Tell where and who decided to do this. Explain, in your own words, why they chose 360 degrees.

      b. What is the definition of 'zero?' Who invented the symbol? Explain in your own words, using the website information.



    3. From the Looking Out For Number One site:

      a. Do the suggested "challenge" at the site and gather some numbers. See if you come up with a reason why you did or did not. Explain in a paragraph why that might be.

      b. Look at the other examples on the site and see if it makes any sense to you. Write a paragraph about what you undrestood.



    4. From the Sketches from Italy site:

      a. Just look at the art and write a paragraph about what feelings you have about them. Art is fun, so relax and just let yourself enjoy this.



    5. From the Cartoon Sampler site: (for your pleasure)

      a. Look at the cartoons here. Do they seem funny or at least make sense to you? Can you see how people make fun at math? Write a sentence about each one telling how math is used in the joke.



    6. Some Math Games (for your pleasure)
      a. Look at the games here. Do they seem fun? Can you see can how people make math fun?
