by kelly buchananAs a musical language of communication , jazz is the first indigenous American style to affect music in the rest of the world. Take yourself back in time about 60-80 years and find out where our roots of music all began!
New Orleans is the most prominent city in the development of Jazz. Artists such as Johnny Dodds, Jimmy Noone, and Sidney Bechet made their debut's in the port city.
Chicago became the focal point for Jazz in the early 1920's when New Orleans musicians found their way north after numerous clubs in the Storyville area of New Orleans were closed.
New York contributed to the richness of jazz in many ways. The first piano style to be incorporated into jazz was popular in New York. James Reese Europe experimented with a style of jazz that involved large orchestras.
Traditional Jazz was the hot dance music of the 1920's, 30's, and early 40's. Dixieland, swing, boogie-woogie, blues, and ragtime may be familiar names. You still might find your feet tapping and your heads bobbing to these familiar sounds of music! Instruments uses in a traditional jazz band may include a frontline of trumpets, trombones, and clarinets, or a soprano sax. The rhythm section would include a tuba, banjo, guitar, piano, and drums.
Modern Jazz is generally more abstract-cool than traditional jazz. It would be intended for more serious listening. Today many people prefer this style of jazz over traditional jazz.
