Research Interests

My research interests focus on the historical and cultural geography of the American West. Recent projects include an illustrated field guide to the American West (How to Read the American West: A Field Guide) and a book of rephotography focused on Montana's cultural landscape (On the Road Again: Montana’s Changing Landscape), both published with the University of Washington Press. Colorado has been another setting for several projects that center around the process of human landscape evolution in the West and I am currently working on another volume of rephotography focused on landscape change in Arizona. I also coauthored two textbooks on world regional geography.
