MSU-Bozeman Wireless Network Access
Frequently Asked Questions
MSU-Bozeman is providing a laptop computer-accessible wireless network currently available in the common areas of
Renne Library, Strand Union Building, Reid, Sherrick, and EPS. Additional locations will be available in the near future. The service is supported by the
Information Technology Center (ITC).
Wireless access: What you should know....
1. You need to register with the ITC helpdesk to use the network.
Faculty, staff, and students of the University or anyone with library privileges, including library patrons
from the general public, may use this service. (Service for non-MSU affiliated library patrons is available only
in the Library) At this time, if you want to use the service, you must visit the ITC Helpdesk. The Helpdesk may be
located by going in the south door of the Renne Library building. For network security purposes, you will need
to provide information about yourself and your laptop by completing a form available at the Helpdesk. You will need
to bring your laptop for configuration changes that allow you to access the wireless network. Your laptop will need
the latest available operating system patches and virus scanner updates. The Helpdesk can help verify that your
computer is secure.
2. Not all hardware will work with the wireless network.
Laptop models expected to work are those running Windows 2000/XP or Macintosh OS with a wireless Network Interface Card (NIC).
Wireless cards must conform to the 802.11b/g, wireless standard. ITC has verified the functionality of the following NICs
in the wireless network: Cisco Aironet 350 Series, Orinoco Gold, Compaq WL 110, 3Com Wireless LAN PC Card, and NetGear
MA 401, 521. Additional brands and models will be added to the list as they are tested by ITC. NICs that are embedded into
a user's laptop do not have to be on this authorized list but ITC cannot guarantee performance.
3. What areas are “covered” by the wireless network?
The center area of the library on the first through fourth floors, including the coffee bar area, seating areas on the
second floor overlooking the coffee bar, and the fountain area on the third floor, is covered. The EPS atrium and most
common areas on the first, second, and third floors are covered. Most common areas on the first and second floors of
the Strand Union Building are covered. The Reid north side stairway common areas on the first through fourth floors
are covered. The Sherrick second floor common area is covered. Additional buildings and locations are being planned.
4. What software will I need?
The only required software is a Web browser on your laptop.
5. Can I print from the network?
Printing from the MSU network is not a problem assuming that you are a member of the MSU domain and logged onto the domain.
6. Am I required to authenticate in order to use the network?
Yes. All faculty, staff, and students wishing to access the wireless network will need to be authenticated by the wireless
system. Renne Library patrons and other guests of the University may be afforded a guest logon account that will provide
Internet access only. In all cases, the user is required to check in with the ITC Helpdesk located in the basement of
Renne Library.
