Constance L. Dickey "Encounter with Contemporary Speakers of Lo Lemosi in Corrèze" |
Having recently spent seven weeks in the south-central region of Corrèze, France, the author describes her (often chance) encounters with several native speakers of the regional Occitan dialect, lo lemosi. Details about the way of life of these speakers, their everyday living environment, and views on the local culture and language are included. A survey of current efforts to reclaim the regional culture and language for the next generation and their potential for success or failure concludes the article. |

Stacy Katz "Teaching Articles: How Students Can Master the French Determiner System"
This article discusses why students of French have difficulty mastering the French determiner system. Concentrating on definite, indefinite, and partitive articles, it provides pedagogical guidelines to aid instructors in presenting this topic as well as a series of activities to be used in class. The activities are based on Lee and VanPatten's theory of structured input and output, Swain's conception of metatalk and some general applications of low-level discourse analysis. I explain that if students are led to induce the linguistic concepts of identifiability and countability, they will gain an understanding of how to use articles correctly in discourse. |

Gita May "The Status of Eighteenth-Century Studies"
An overview of the latest research in eighteenth-century studies demonstrates its continued vitality and spectacular renewal following World War II, despite the latest onslaughts on its ideological, political, and social message. New historical and theoretical approaches have also significantly contributed to this renewal of interest in an age that was for too long reduced to simplistic formulas and clichés. The major Enlightenment figure that has most benefited from this renascence is doubtless Diderot. Other areas of literary scholarship that have been particularly innovative involve the novel and the role of women, not merely as muses and salonnières, but also as authors in their own right. Eighteenth-century societies have flourished all over the world and have been remarkably successful in publishing journals and sponsoring meetings and conferences. |

Brian Gordon Kennelly "Links and the Teaching of Contemporary Issues in the Francophone World"
At an institution committed to distance learning, I recently taught a Web-dependent course on contemporary issues in the Francophone world. Some of the highs and lows, and the pitfalls that I faced are recounted. I discuss how such a course might change teaching and learning practices compared to one in which instruction is based on the print media and how it might enhance the teaching of foreign languages, decenter authority, and encourage in an innovative way different styles of learning. |
