Alcohol and Nutrition

The Indian Health Service has identified alcoholism as the most significant health problem of American Indians and Alaska Natives.

Malnutrition is the main nutritional effect of alcohol/substance abuse through:

Ø      Compromised food intake

Ø      Impairment of digestion

Ø      Impairment or alteration of nutrient absorption, use, or degradation

Malnutrition is caused by an unbalanced, insufficient, or excessive diet or by impaired absorption, assimilation, or use of foods.
