Effects on Adults

 

Ø    death (of either victim or perpetrator) by homicide

Ø    death by suicide

Ø    disabling injuries

Ø    depression-victim may become immobilized due to constant fear

Ø    difficulty in carrying out duties of normal adult daily living

Ø    emotional abuse and deprivation

Ø    break-up of family

Ø    perpetuation of social isolation for fear of violence being disclosed

Ø    continuing violence which will escalate if alternative behaviors are not learned

Ø    expansion of violence into the community

 

Effects on Children

 

Ø     death by homicide

Ø     death by suicide

Ø     injuries caused by being near victim and abuser during a violent incident

Ø     emotional injuries such as low self-esteem

Ø     depression

Ø     aggressive behavior towards delinquency

Ø     poor school adjustment

Ø     modeling behavior, learned aggressor/victim roles

Ø     runaway episodes

Ø     alcohol and drug problems

Ø     continuation of violent behaviors in their adult relationships

Ø     expansion of violence into the community
