The exact relationship between Type II diabetes and genetics is not well understood. But because Native Americans have a higher prevalence rate, scientists are studying Native populations in hope to find the connection(s) between the two. So far, scientists have found that there are many genes, not just one, that are related to Type II diabetes. Scientists have also come up with theories about these genes. One of these theories is the thrifty gene theory. The thrifty gene theory explains that there were specific cells in our bodies that specialized in storing fat through the long winter. And today with the abundance of fatty foods and people not getting enough exercise, the population has a greater chance of storing even more fat. This in turn leads to Native Americans becoming more susceptible to diabetes.
