Gestational diabetes is a condition that occurs in 4% of pregnant women, but usually ends after the baby is born. It occurs when hormones within the placenta create a resistance to the way insulin reacts in the body. Women with a history of gestational diabetes are at a higher risk for developing diabetes later in life.
