| What kinds of prevention are needed to keep
the number of diabetes cases from increasing? Although today there is no
cure for diabetes, some of the prevention and management strategies recommended
are care, frequent exercise
and good nutrition , weight management. Type
II diabetes can be controlled with nutrition and exercise recommendations
such as increased physical activity and a change in the type and amount
of food eaten. It is also important that a person with diabetes complications
take the necessary care to prevent the complications from getting worse.
Some of the necessary care includes importance of blood sugar control,
regular eye exams and regular foot care.
Today the status for diabetes prevention and treatment looks better for the Native American population than it has in the past. In 1997, Congress gave $30 million each year for the next five years to eligible Indian Health Services, tribes and urban programs for diabetes. With the help of this money Native American communities have come together to provide the necessary prevention and support of diabetes. |
