High School ROTC Scholarship (4-year and 3-year Advanced Designees)

This scholarship is awarded to high school seniors. Scholarships pay for full tuition and mandatory fees, for both resident and non-resident students. You may elect to receive $5,000 per semester or receive the tuition and fees money. Scholarship awardees also receive a book allowance of $600 per semester (not including summer) and a monthly tax-free stipend of $420 to defray the cost of living. Interested students can apply at ROTC Scholarships | goarmy.com starting June 12th before their senior year in high school.

There are two types of high school scholarships: 4-year and 3-year Advanced Designee. 3-year Advanced Designee scholarship winners must satisfactorily participate in Army ROTC their freshmen year in order for their 3-year scholarship to take effect at the beginning of their sophomore year. For out of state 3-year Advanced Designee winners, MSU will waive tuition as long as student are medically (DoDMERB) qualified. 

Basic Eligibility Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Must be at least 17 years of age by October of the semester you are entering college.
  • Must not reach 31 years of age by December 31 of the year you will graduate from college.
  • If you are taking or have taken college courses you must be considered a freshman and have four academic years remaining for a baccalaureate degree upon enrollment.
  • Have a minimum high school GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.
  • Satisfactorily explain any record of arrest and/or civil conviction.
  • Have no moral or personal conviction against bearing arms, or supporting and defending the Constitution of the United States.

Those applicants advancing to further scholarship consideration are scheduled for a medical examination with the nearest medical facility and a personal interview with the nearest Army ROTC Professor of Military Science.

Personal Interview

This interview is held with the nearest Army ROTC Professor of Military Science. Any travel to and from the interview is at your own expense.

Medical Examination

Individuals selected for a scholarship are contacted and scheduled for a medical examination by the Department of Defense Medical Examination Review Board (DoDMERB). Your medical condition is not a consideration in the selection of winners; however, all winners must be medically qualified and enrolled to receive scholarship benefits. Travel to and from the medical examination is at your own expense.

Military Obligation

If you are selected for a High School Army ROTC Scholarship, you are required to:

  • Sign a contract with the Secretary of the Army.
  • Attend a 5-week Advanced Camp between your 3rd and 4th Year at Ft Knox, Kentucky.
  • Accept a Commission to serve on Army active duty, National Guard, or Army Reserves upon degree completion.
  • Serve in the military for a period of 8 years. This may be fulfilled by:
    1. Serving active duty, if selected, for 4 years followed by 4 years of service in the Individual Ready Reserve(IRR)/National Guard/Army Reserves. Term of service begins upon arrival at Basic Officer Leadership Course.
    2. Serve 8 years in the National Guard/Army Reserves,that includes a 3-6 month active duty term for initial training. Terms of obligation begin at time of commissioning.

 

Campus Based Scholarships (2-4 year)

Campus based scholarships are offered to students who were not offered or did not apply for the High School ROTC Scholarship or Green to Gold program. These scholarships may range in length from 2-4 years. Scholarships pay for full tuition and mandatory fees, for both resident and non-resident students. You may elect to receive $5,000 per semester instead of receiving the tuition and fees money.  Scholarship awardees also receive a book allowance of $600 per semester (not to include summer) and a tax-free monthly stipend of $420 to defray the cost of living. Applications are initiated by the Department of Military Science, Army ROTC at MSU.

Basic Eligibility Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Must not reach 31 years of age by December 31of the year you will graduate from college.
  • If you are taking or have taken college courses you must be considered an academic sophomore for the 3-Year and an academic junior for the 2-year Scholarship, and have the same number of years remaining for a baccalaureate degree upon enrollment.
  • Have a minimum high school GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.
  • Satisfactory explanation of any record of arrest and/or civil conviction.
  • Have no moral or personal conviction against bearing arms or supporting and defending the Constitution of the United States.

Those applicants advancing to further scholarship consideration are scheduled for a medical examination and a personal or board interview.

  • Accept a Commission to serve on active duty, National Guard, or Army Reserves upon degree completion.
  • Serve in the military for a period of 8 years. This may be fulfilled by:
    1. Serving active duty, if selected, for 4 years, followed by 4 years of service in the Individual Ready Reserve(IRR)/National Guard/Army Reserves. Term of service begins upon arrival at Basic Officer Leadership Course.
    2. Serve 8 years in the National Guard/Army Reserves, that includes a 3-6 month active duty term for initial training. Terms of obligation begins at time of commissioning.

 

2-Year Scholarship

Do you have two years remaining in college?  Are you among the select few that have the ability and drive to become leaders but did not initially take the Army ROTC classes? You can still join Army ROTC by attending Basic Camp between your sophomore and junior years; completing the last two years of ROTC, earning your degree, and ultimately commissioning as an officer in the United States Army.

Scholarship Eligibility Requirements

  • Be a U.S. citizen or legal U.S. resident.
  • Be between 17 and 30 years old.
  • Be enrolled in college full time in pursuit of a baccalaureate or advanced degree and have at least two years of school remaining.
  • Have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.  To be competitive, a 3.0 or higher is required.
  • Meet military medical qualification standards.
  • Have no civil convictions (unless waiver is approved).
  • Have no more than three dependents (unless waiver is approved).

Military Obligation

  • Attend a 5-week Advanced Camp between your 3rd and 4th Year at Fort Knox, Kentucky.
  • Accept a Commission to serve active duty, National Guard, or Army Reserve upon degree completion.
  • Serve in the military for a period of 8 years. This may be fulfilled by:
    1. Serving active duty, if selected, for 4 years followed by 4 years of service in the Individual Ready Reserve (IRR)/National Guard/Army Reserve. Term of service begins upon arrival at Basic Officer Leadership Course.
    2. Serve 8 years in the National Guard/Army Reserves that includes a 3-6 month active duty term for initial training. Terms of obligation begins at time of commissioning.

 

Green-to-Gold Scholarship

The Green to Gold program provides selected active duty enlisted members of the Army an opportunity to complete their baccalaureate or master's degree ``and obtain a commission through participation in the Army ROTC program. If you are currently on active duty and are accepted by a college or university, then you can compete for a Green to Gold scholarship. There are a variety of Green to Gold Scholarships that range widely in length and type of benefits. There is also the Active Duty Option (ADO) Green to Gold Scholarship.

Scholarship Eligibility Requirements

  • U.S. Citizen.
  • Age - Be under 31 years of age on 31 December of the year you complete all requirements for a commission and a college baccalaureate degree. This is a statutory requirement and there are no waivers authorized.
  • Cannot have been convicted of a Domestic Violence Crime.
  • Have a minimum of 2 years Active Duty as well as 3 months of active duty for every one month of specialized training (waiver can be requested).
  • GT score of 110 or greater.
  • Pass the ACFT within the last 6 months.
  • Be a High School Graduate or equivalent.
  • Cumulative High School or College GPA of 2.5
  • Letter of Acceptance to College/University of Choice offering Army ROTC.
  • Letter of Acceptance from the Professor of Military Science of Army ROTC Battalion.
  • Favorable National Agency Check (or have initiated the action).
  • DoDMERB Medical Qualification
  • Be eligible to Reenlist.
  • Not be a conscientious objector.
  • No more than 3 dependents including spouse (waiver can be requested).

Military Obligation

  • Attend a 5-week Advanced Camp between your 3rd and 4th Year at Fort Knox, Kentucky.
  • Accept a Commission to serve active duty, National Guard, or Army Reserve upon degree completion.
  • Serve in the military for a period of 8 years. This may be fulfilled by:
    1. Serving active duty, if selected, for 4 years followed by 4 years of service in the Inactive Ready Reserve (IRR)/National Guard/Army Reserve. Term of service begins upon arrival at Basic Officer Leadership Course.
    2. Serve 8 years in the National Guard/Army Reserves that includes a 3-6 month active duty term for initial training. Terms of obligation begins at time of commissioning.

 

Guaranteed Reserve Forces Duty Scholarships (GRFD)

The GRFD program is designed for cadets who are interested in obtaining a commission in the U.S. Army Reserves or National Guard with a guarantee for a reserve component assignment. Scholarships cover full tuition and mandatory fees, and range from 2 to 4 years. Scholarship awardees also receive a book allowance of $600 per semester (not including summer) and a monthly tax-free stipend of $420. These Cadets also receive weekend drill and annual training pay (paid as an E5) as participants in the Simultaneous Membership Program (SMP).

Basic Eligibility Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Must not reach 31 years of age by December 31of the year you will graduate from college.
  • Have a minimum High school GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale
  • Satisfactory explain any record of arrest and/or civil conviction.
  • Have no moral or personal conviction against bearing arms or supporting and defending the Constitution of the United States.
  • Must complete the ROTC Basic Course requirements or Basic Training.
  • Must be willing to participate in the SMP program with a Guard or Reserve unit. If you do not belong to a unit, you must obtain a letter of acceptance to the unit, stating that they will accept you as a SMP cadet.
  • Must be medically qualified.

Military Obligation

If you are selected for a GRFD scholarship, you are required to sign a GRFD contract, guaranteeing service in the National Guard or U.S. Army Reserve upon commissioning.

  • Serve 8 years in a National Guard or Reserve unit that includes 3-6 months active duty for initial training. Terms of obligation begins at time of commissioning.
  • Attend the 5-week Advanced Camp between their 3rd and 4th year at Fort Knox, Kentucky.
  • Accept a commission to serve in the National Guard or Reserve upon degree completion.
  • Serve as a SMP cadet in the unit of your choice with an available SMP slot.
