What to Expect
Who Goes to Counseling?
On average, CPS provides counseling and informational services to about 1500 students each year. Virtually any personal issues are appropriate for counseling if they are negatively impacting your functioning in your various roles. Examples include (but are not limited to) relating to family or peers, feeling depressed or anxious, questions about sexuality or relationships, drug and alcohol use, low self-esteem, career choices, or resolving past abuse or trauma. Those who come to CPS will find a professional, caring, non-judgmental atmosphere to discuss what is concerning them. Coming here does NOT mean that you are crazy, weak, ineffective, or sick, but rather that you are choosing to explore a problem and optimize your functioning.
What Can I Expect from Counseling?
You will have an initial appointment with one of our counselors to determine what, if any, services are appropriate for you. This will include taking some background information in addition to helping you clarify your concerns. Some people find relief in one or two sessions, others pefer to continue with on-going weekly or every-other-week appointments. Students who choose on-going counseling typically work with the counselors for 8-10 sessions. In some cases, group therapy may be most beneficial. Whatever you and your initial counselor decide upon, your counseling will provide you a supportive forum to discuss your concerns. Your counselor will NOT offer an immediate solution, over-analyze you, know all the answers, or tell you what to do, but will facilitiate your progress by helping you make choices and decisions that are right for YOU.
Where is the Counseling Center Situated?
We are located in room 211 Swingle (the Student Health Service Building).
How Do I Make an Appointment?
We used to ask you to come to the office and complete some paperwork. Now you can call, between 8:00 am-11.45 am and 1:00-5:00 pm each weekday, to make an appointment. Please note that, during summer school, our hours, are reduced to half days only.
