Testing
At times, Counseling Center clients may be offered the opportunity to participate in some psychological assessment/testing. This most commonly involves personality assessment, but occasionally involves intellectual assessment. The most common assessment tools used by the Counseling Center staff include the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI-2), the Rorschach Inkblot Test, and the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS-R). A small fee is requested for most testing.
Testing is typically offered to gain a better understanding of a client's personality dynamics and/or symptoms, with the expectation that this increased understanding will facilitate the counseling process. Sometimes, clients are given the opportunity to participate in testing at the beginning of counseling, and sometimes, this may not happen until several weeks afterwards. Testing is only done with the permission of the client, and direct feedback about test results is always given to the client. It is important to note that test results are seen as hypotheses, not as the absolute truth about an individual. Clients will always be asked for their input about whether or not the test results seem to be accurate descriptors. As with all other information that clients convey to Counseling Center staff, results of assessments are kept strictly confidential, and can only be released with the written permission of the client.
