Career Development Steps

  • The Strong Interest Inventory is renowned as the gold standard of self-assessment instruments when considering one’s interests and how they relate to careers.

The Strong Interest Inventory® instrument is a powerful tool that can help you make satisfying decisions about your career and education. Whether you are just starting out in your career, thinking about a change, or considering education options for career preparation, you can benefit from the wealth of information reflected in your Strong results. Understanding your Strong Profile can help you identify a career focus and begin your career planning and exploration process.

Keep in mind that the Strong measures interests, not skills or abilities, and that the results can help guide you toward rewarding careers, work activities, education programs, and leisure activities—all based on your interests.  Remember that managing your career is not a one-time decision but a series of decisions made over your lifetime.

  • The Strong Interest Inventory costs $20 for students or $30 for non-students, is payable when you meet with your coach for a personalized interpretation.
  • After having your results interpreted, consult the list of majors at MSU that correspond with various occupations listed from the Strong Interest Survey. (Hint: you’ll have to take this instrument for this to make sense!)
  • The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator Career Report applies your results from the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® (MBTI®) assessment to help you identify job families and occupations that are a good fit for your reported MBTI type. The MBTI tool was developed by Isabel Briggs Myers and Katharine Briggs and is based on Carl Jung's theory of psychological types. It has been used for more than 60 years to help people become more satisfied and successful in their careers.

Take this popular indicator online to assess your preferred behavior traits and gifts, as well as occupations that are attractive to people with similar personality types.

  • The Myers Briggs Type Indicator costs $50 for students, $60 for non-students*, payable when you meet with your coach, and includes a personalized interpretation (*plus $30/hour of interpretation).
