About the Program:
Established in 1994 as an outreach program through Montana State University College of Business, The Family Business Program offers education and information to the backbone of many Montana businesses, those that are owned and managed by families of Montana.  The annual seminar and awards luncheon, usually held in September, has reached out to hundreds of businesses and provided education and fact based information to thousands of participants.

The Family Business Program is the only program like this statewide and provides recognition to pioneering and successful family businesses through the Montana Family Business of the Year Awards Program. This program allows small businesses to share ideas and concerns common to most small businesses.

The program is coordinated by Nancy Dodd, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Business.  Karen Beach, program assistant, can be reached at:

OUR SPONSORS

State Farm Logo Red II

In March 2005, State Farm Insurance Companies recognized Bozeman resident Robert Jaedicke for his many years of service on their Board of Directors with a gift to MSU College of Business.  The funds were placed in an endowment for the Family Business Program, providing a way to enhance the annual program and develop new outreach programs and seminars.

In addition to the endowment, State Farm has provided annual funding to enhance the current program and allow growth and development of additional programs.  Agents from across the state have pledged their support for the program's endowment.

9:30 – 11:30 am Keynote Presentation
12:00 – 1:30 pm Luncheon and Awards

KEYNOTE PRESENTATION

Gary Bishop, an adjunct instructor of management in the College of Business, will be the guest speaker for Family Business Day 2007. His seminar, "Out of Service," is an overview of customer service and how it has become a lost art in our society.

“Do I have to respond to each and every customer demand just to keep him or her as a customer?” “Can my staff really be trained to deliver the service I dictate?” “Can we really afford customer service?” “How can we measure the results?” These and many other questions will be discussed in this 2 hour overview of customer service. Included will be real life experiences in service delivery, as well as humorous anecdotes from the business world and recommendations for improving customer service.

Take Home Value
A portion of this presentation will be a hands-on workshop focusing on delivering outstanding customer service and effectively responding to customer demands. With the knowledge gained from this presentation, small businesses will be armed with a customer service survival kit. You will better understand the paradigm shift that has taken place in business, how to swim against the current and emerge successfully.

FAMILY BUSINESS DAY 'ON THE ROAD'

In 2006 the Family Business Program 'On the Road' was introduced, offering similar educational programs as featured at the Family Business Day to family owned and small businesses in communities across the state. In January 2007, more than 50 people attended the premier of the MSU College of Business/State Farm Insurance Family Business Program On the Road in Helena. Planned in coordination with Montana Chamber of Commerce Business Days at the Capitol, Family Business Program On the Road offered a seminar specifically for family businesses. Dr. Mike Kroff, an assistant professor of marketing at the MSU College of Business presented, "Finding and Reaching Your Target Market." His presentation provided information intending to teach business strategies that assist family business to define the changes in their communities, and to successfully reach their targeted markets. A success, Family Business Program 'On the Road' is sure to become a popular and anticipated event state-wide.

MONTANA STATE UNIVERSITY STATE FARM INSURANCE FAMILY BUSINESS PROGRAM

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS
Nomination Form

It is once again time to solicit nominations for the 2008 MSU College of Business State Farm Insurance Family Business Awards.  If you have provided us with nominations in the past, I hope it was a pleasant experience for you.  Most businesses are honored to be nominated by their peers because it is a sign of admiration and respect.  This is an opportunity for individuals, businesses, committees, and other groups to give recognition to those family owned businesses with which they have had positive experiences.  Awards will be given at the 2008 Family Business Day event on September 26 at the Holiday Inn in Bozeman.

Last year we had over 50 nominations and conferred seven awards in a variety of categories.  This year we are hoping for even more nominations and completed applications.  You have until May 19, 2008 to get your nomination to us, so please consider nominating one or more family businesses you would like to see honored at the state and possibly national level.  These businesses contribute so much to the economy of our state as well as making significant time and financial contributions to their communities that we should recognize them.

The only real disappointment in this whole process is the number of really great businesses who are nominated and never submit completed applications.  If you do nominate a business, we would appreciate any help you could provide in getting “your” business to submit an application before July 7, 2008.  Many business owners wait until the last minute to start working on the application and then find it overwhelming to do in a short period of time.  Maybe a little nudge from you would get them to start and complete the application.

Thank you very much for your participation in the Family Business Program at Montana State University.  Click here for Nomination Forms
