Membership and General Information

Graduate Council minutes

Responsibilities

    a) The Graduate Council reviews and approves all degree programs, new graduate policies and nominations for Foundation Graduate Achievement Awards.
    b) The Graduate Council acts as the primary advisory group for the Graduate Vice Provost and the Assistant to the Graduate Vice Provost.
    c) The Council meets monthly or as required.
Appointment Criteria
    a) Members must be tenure or tenure-track faculty.
    b) Members are nominated by department heads and elected by college faculty.
Voting
    a) Voting members represent one faculty member from each academic college.
    b) The Vice Provost of Graduate Studies is the nonvoting Ex Officio member.
Length of Term
    a) A membership term is three (3) years.
    b) Elections are held in the fall of each year.


The Graduate Student Academic Appeals Board (GSAAB)

Membership and General Information


Responsibilities

    a) The GSAAB considers graduate students' appeals related to established University academic policies covering, but not limited to, admission, retention, and/or graduation requirements. Appeals of administrative actions of the Vice Provostor Assistant/Associate Vice Provostof the Division of Graduate Education and appeals from non-degree students seeking admission to the Division of Graduate Education will also be considered.
    b) The GSAAB serves in an advisory capacity to the Graduate Vice Provost.
    c) The Graduate Student Academic Appeals Board meets monthly during the Academic Year provided there are appeals pending.

    • Appeals should be submitted at least one week prior to the board meeting.
Appointment Criteria
    One faculty member is appointed by the Vice Provostof each academic college. An alternate is also appointed by each College Vice Provostin the event the primary member is unable to attend a meeting.
Voting
    a) Voting Members consist of one (1) faculty member from each academic college.
    b) Voting Ex Officio Member is the Graduate Vice Provost, who does not vote in cases of appeal of previous administrative actions of the Vice Provost's office.
Length of Term
    Membership term is two (2) years.
Appeals Process
    a) All graduate academic appeals must be reviewed by the Department Head prior to submission to the Division of Graduate Education office for GSAAB review.
    b) Student appeals must contain a letter from the student as well as approvals (signature and/or letter) from the advisor or department head. Appeals submitted without the department and Vice Provost's signatures will not be considered.
Guests
a) Deans, Department Heads and Faculty may be invited to attend meetings if it is believed that their input or knowledge of the background concerning a particular issue is of particular importance.
b) Students appealing may elect to have another student representative present during the discussion of the appeal to ensure fair and equal disclosure.
c) All guests to Academic Appeals Board meetings will be asked to exit the room prior to deliberation.
