This course is designed to examine the psychological, behavioral, sociological, and cultural underpinnings in the assessment and treatment of clients affected by addictions.

The course explores a variety of helping strategies for reducing the negative effects of substance use, abuse, dependence, and addictive disorders (CACREP, Section III, C.5.). Ethical issues related to the field of Addictions Counseling will also be explored.

This course is designed to offer in-depth exploration of alcohol and drug studies. Students will integrate information learned from previous addictions courses with cutting edge research within the field of addictions as it pertains to a particular population or topic specific to addiction counseling.

INSTRUCTOR: Teresa M. Christensen, Ph.D.

Terry is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Colorado and Virginia, and a LPC-Board Approved A photo of Dr. Teresa Christensen.Supervisor in Louisiana.  She is also a Nationally Certified Counselor (NCC), and a Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor (RPT-S) who has counseled children, adolescents, and families in a variety of settings for over 16 years. She is currently an Associate Professor of Counseling, Chair of Counseling Children and Adolescent Post-Graduate Certificate program, and Faculty Advisor for the Rho Upsilon Chi chapter of Chi Sigma Iota, a national honorary society, at Regis University in Denver, CO. For the past 13 years, Teresa has served as a review team member for the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). In addition, Teresa has served on various executive committees for professional associations and editorial boards for professional journals related to counseling which currently include: the Association for Play Therapy (APT), the Colorado Association for Play Therapy (CAPT), the Association for Counselor Educators and Supervisors (ACES), and the Association for Specialists in Group Work (ASGW). Teresa has received several research awards which most recently included the Best Group Research Article of the Year (2007) Award in an ACA journal granted by the Association for Specialists in Group Work.
