Clinical Experience Requirements for Practicum & Student Teaching

Candidates in the MSU Teacher Education Program must complete the following Clinical Experience placement requirements:

 

1. Candidates completing a teaching major

Elementary Education (K-8) majors are required to complete:

  • 6 Major Methods, Practicum I (minimum 80 hours clinical work), and Practicum II (minimum 90 hours clinical work; complete abbreviated Teacher Work Sample – TWS)
  • Student Teaching – 14 week placement; full TWS (5 lessons)
  • If you are adding:
    • Special Education Endorsement – 10 weeks for major & 10 weeks SPED; full TWS for major
    • Reading Endorsement – 14 weeks in major & 90 hours in Reading Internship; full TWS required for major & endorsement
    • International Student Teaching – 4-6 weeks local placement; full TWS for major; 8-10 weeks abroad

Secondary Education (5-12) majors are required to complete:

  • Major Methods & Practicum (minimum 45 hours clinical work; complete abbreviated TWS)
  • Student Teaching – 14 week placement; full TWS (5 lessons)
  • If you are adding:
    • Special Education Endorsement – 10 weeks for major & 10 weeks SPED; full TWS for major
    • Reading Endorsement – 14 weeks in major & 90 hourse in Reading Internship; full TWS required for major & endorsement
    • International Student Teaching – 4-6 weeks local placement; full TWS for major; 8-10 weeks abroad

K-12 Education majors are required to complete:

  • Major Methods & Practicum (minimum 45 hours clinical work; complete abbreviated TWS)
  • Student Teaching – 14 week placement (the equivalent of 7 weeks in elementary and 7 weeks in secondary); one K-8 TWS & one 5-12 TWS
  • If you are adding:
    • Special Education Endorsement – 10 weeks for major & 10 weeks SPED; full TWS for major
    • Reading Endorsement – 14 weeks in major & 6 weeks in Internship; full TWS for major
    • International Student Teaching – 4-6 weeks local placement; full TWS for major; 8-10 weeks abroad

     

2. Candidates completing a teaching major and teaching minor

  • Teaching Major: requires Major Methods & Practicum (minimum 150 hours clinical work for K-8; minimum 45 hours clinical work for 5-12 & K-12; complete abbreviated TWS)
  • Teaching Minor: requires Minor Methods (no additional clinical work is required)
  • Student Teaching: 14 week placement (10 weeks in major & the equivalent of 4 weeks in minor if possible); full TWS for major (5 lessons) & abbreviated TWS for minor (3 lessons)

 

3. Candidates completing a double major

  • First Major: requires Major Methods & Practicum (minimum 150 hours clinical work for K-8; minimum 45 hours clinical work for 5-12 & K-12; complete abbreviated TWS)
  • Second Major: requires Major Methods & 1 credit of Practicum (minimum 45 hours clinical work; attend first practicum class meeting, meet Clinical Supervisor (FS), set up 2 observations with FS, complete abbreviated TWS)
  • Student Teaching: 20 week placement – 10 weeks & 10 weeks (8 credits each)

 

4. Candidates completing a double degree (Same as above)

  • First Major: requires Major Methods & Practicum (minimum 45 hours for 5-12 and K-12 and minimum of 150 hours for K-8)
  • Second Major: requires Major Methods & 1 credit of Practicum (minimum 45 hours clinical work; attend first practicum class meeting, meet Clinical Supervisor (FS), set up 2 observations with FS, complete abbreviated TWS)
  • Student Teaching: 20 week placement – 10 weeks & 10 weeks (8 credits each)
