Research Project Summary
My research involves an analysis of snowpack, stream flow, and temperature records. The study will focus on determining correlations between snowfall, water availability and climate trends in the upper Missouri Headwaters. In this high alpine headwater of the Missouri River water availability is dependent on winter snowpack. Relating trends between winter snowfall and spring runoff with inter annual or decadal climate patterns is helpful to monitoring and predicting water availability for agriculture and other uses. The main data source will be SNOTEL records from the Natural Resources and Conservation Service.
A sub study will be conducted on the representativeness of these SNOTEL records. Nearby SNOTEL sites will be visited and the metadata analyzed to understand how changes to the station and surrounding location could affect record keeping.
