Simple Steps for Applying for Financial Aid

Simple steps for applying for financial aid through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

College Office
  1. Apply for a FAFSA PIN number to electronically sign your FAFSA. Your parent, if you are a dependent, needs their own PIN. Go to: www.pin.ed.gov

  2. Submit your FAFSA online at www.fafsa.ed.gov, or request and mail a paper application from the same Website.  The electronic application has a much faster processing time vs. the paper application. Make sure the application is complete and has all the required signatures. Most Montana schools have a March 1st priority filing date.

  3. Receive and review your Student Aid Report (SAR) from the Federal Processor. This generally takes 1- 2 weeks. Review it carefully!  If there are any corrections needed, make them and resubmit the application.

  4. Read all communications received from the Financial Aid Office and provide any requested documentation.

The Office of Financial Aid Services will communicate via e-mail with all students for whom the University has a valid e-mail address.

Please remember to always keep your physical and e-mail addresses current with the University.  Students need to update their addresses through MyInfo. Or contact the Registrar's Office at (406) 994-6650.

  5. Students will receive an e-mail with instructions on how to view and complete an electronic version of the Financial Aid Notification. You need to respond to the award notification within 30 days or the offered aid is subject to cancellation.

If we do not have a valid e-mail address for you, or if you request it, we will send you a paper notification.

PLEASE NOTE: Accepting your aid does NOT Confirm your Bill (pay your fees) with the Student Accounts Office! See step 7 below.

  6. If you are accepting a Federal Direct Loan for the first time, you can complete the required Entrance Counseling and Master Promissory Note from the Loans page on our Website.

If you are accepting a Nursing or Perkins Loan, additional information will be sent to you by mail from the Office of Financial Aid Services.

  7. Confirm your Bill (pay fees) with the Student Accounts Office every semester.  Neglecting to do so will hold all aid from crediting to your account.

  8. All financial aid awards, except Work Study, are applied to your university account/bill.  The Student Accounts Office (Montana Hall Room 102) will deposit any residual aid funds in your bank account if you are signed up for direct deposit, or will mail your refund check to you at the beginning of each semester

Please contact the Financial Aid Office at (406) 994-2845 with any questions or concerns as soon as they arise. We are here to help you achieve your educational goals!
