The Follow the Grain course served as a template for a newly funded College
of Agriculture education initiative, Agriculture in a Global Context. This initiative, supported by a two
year $222,000 USDA CSREES challenge grant and College of Agriculture matching
resources, will enable MSU College of Agriculture faculty to develop three capstone undergraduate
courses on the food grains industry (Follow the Grain), the livestock industry (From Conception to Consumption),
and the role of technology in sustainable limited resource farming (Technology and Agricultural Development). Each
of these courses will utilze innovative instructional methods and include international field trips as integral
components of the students' learning experiences. The grant will also enable MSU to collaborate with two 1994 Tribal
Land Grant Colleges (Fort Peck Community College and Dull Knife Memorial College) to provide these courses to students
at those colleges through distance delivery technology.
