Powerful Tools for Caregivers

POWERFUL TOOLS FOR CAREGIVERS (PTC) is an educational program developed by Legacy Health System's Caregiver Services, that provides family caregivers with the skills and confidence to better care for themselves while caring for someone with a chronic illness. PTC consists of six 2-1/2 hour classes co-led by trained facilitators who employ a standardized curriculum.

In the six-week PTC class, caregivers learn how to:

  • Utilize community resources
  • Better manage stress
  • Communicate effectively with friends, family & healthcare providers
  • Cope with difficult emotions
  • Take better steps to care for themselves
 
Powerful Tools for Caregivers, Fall 2007 Classes

Billings: September 19-October 24, Wednesday evenings, 6:30-8:00pm, at the Billings Clinic Fortin Center. For more information contact Bernie Mason @ 406-256-2828.

Great Falls: September 18-October 23, Tuesday afternoons, 2-3:30pm, at the Sletten Regional Cancer Institute, 1101 26th St. South. Cost is $50 and scholarships are available. For more information call 406-455-3636 or Jona McNamee @ 454-6980.

Hamilton: October 30-December 4, Tuesday afternoons, 1:30-2:30pm, at the Ravalli County Council on Aging, 310 Old Corvallis Road. For more information call 406-363-5690.

Hardin: October 8-November 12, Monday evenings, 6:00-7:30pm, at the courthouse basement community room. For more information call Laurie Lautt @ 406-665-9770.

Kalispell: Ocotber 9-November 13, Tuesday afternoons, 2-4:30pm, at Northwest Montana Human Resources, 214 Main St. For more information call 406-758-5422. Class leaders are Julie Sonderegger and Starla Robinson.

Mineral County: Ocotober 4-November 15 (no class October 25), Thursday afternoons, 1:30-3:00pm, at the Mineral Community Hospital Conference Room in Superior. Class is free. Class size is limited; please register one week prior to first class date. Transportation and respite care are provided upon request for class participants. Register by calling 883-7284 or 1-800-266-4183.

Missoula: October 9-November 13, Tuesday afternoons, 2-3:30pm, at Missoula Aging Services, 337 Stephens Ave. Pre-registration is required. Cost is $22 for materials, plus sliding scale course fee. POWERFUL TOOLS FOR CAREGIVERS CLASS LEADER TRAINING:

Becoming a Class Leader--Class Leaders are trained by Master Trainers during a 2-1/2 day intensive seminar. Over 1000 Class Leaders in 23 states have been trained to deliver PTC in community-based settings.

Becoming a Master Trainer--Master Trainers have completed the Class Leader Training and have taught the class at least twice. To become a Master Trainer, Class Leaders participate in an on-line or telephone conference-call training.
