In many countries, the bugs are just waiting to attack unprepared travelers. A case of dengue fever can really wreck your day/week/month. The list of diseases is long, and although most are pretty uncommon, some of the more common ones are pretty nasty.

Fortunately, immunizations (vaccinations) and fairly simple health precautions can keep you from catching any of a large number of infectious diseases.

Many of the more common infectious diseases can be prevented by vaccinations

Other infectious diseases can be prevented by using good insect protection. Look at our Other Travel Resources site for sources for mosquito nets, etc.

Some diseases, like malaria, can be prevented by taking medications before, during and after your trip.

Sexually transmitted diseases also be a risk just as they can be in the United States.

Infections can also be transmitted by food and water.

And animal bites can also cause diseases like rabies.

Medical hygiene may not be good in some countries, and medical care there may expose you to diseases from blood and body fluids (imagine getting a shot with a dirty needle...it could happen!). The MSU Student Health Service can provide you with sterile disposable syringes to take with you in case you need medical care when you are  traveling. Just ask!

You will also want to keep track of disease outbreaks in the countries you plan to visit, so you can be prepared or perhaps change that part of your itinerary.

We can help you prepare for all of these health risks. Call us at the MSU Student Health Service at (406) 994-2311.
