Enterprise Security
Two new ITC security related working groups have been formed! The Security Practitioners group will meet bi-weekly to discuss project activity currently underway amongst the full-time security staff in ITC. The Security Collaboration Group will meet monthly to discuss on-going security challenges to ensure open communication within ITC on matters related to information security. This group is comprised of members identified by the ITC Directors as having significant involvement in security activities.
Are you following security best practices? Is your anti-virus and anti-spyware current and properly configured? Do you have the latest updates installed? Are you running a properly configured firewall? Are you managing your data correctly? As we continue to develop our Security Services program, we are taking steps to ensure that our own house is in order. This includes the development of ITC Security Practices which will be disseminated to the department in the near future.
Network Systems
The ITC area in the basement of the Renne Library is being rewired in order to meet Category 6 cabling standards and Gigabit network switches. The rework will deliver gigabit-to-the-desktop at all ITC locations in the Library.
The major parts of the electrical system upgrade for the server/network rooms have been accomplished. All of our servers and central network switches and devices are now protected with Uninterruptable Power Systems and generators.
Unfortunately, we still struggle with insufficient air conditioning and electrical capacity. We are still not in a position to accept additional departmental servers in the “distributed” room.
Contract negotiations are now underway for the implementation to the State’s next generation data network. Bresnan Business Services is the announced winner.

Desktop Security Information
McAfee VirusScan 8.5i has patch 4 available which corrects a number of problems.
For existing users apply just the patch from
\\software\msuapps\mcafee\VirusScan8.5i\Patches\VSE85iP4\Setup.exe.
For new installations use
\\software\msuapps\mcafee\VirusScan8.5i\Download\vscan85iP4.exe.
A new VirusScan 8.6 for Mac OSX 10.4-10.5 is also available at \\software\msuapps\mcafee\VirusScanMac8.6\VirusScan8.6.dmg.
The current version of LANDesk we are using is 8.7 SP5. LANDesk version 8.8 has been released and will be installed after some testing.
To get the latest version of the LANDesk agent go to
\\jasper\ldlogon\LANDeskAgent_with_status.exe.
Vulnerability scanning is being done on the ITC computers submitted to Dan for three of the five ITC groups.
In addition to the latest Microsoft updates, a number of third party vendors have released critical updates recently.
