Dialing Information
On Campus Calls - Enter the 4-digit extension number. Consult your MSU Directory
for extension numbers or dial Extension 0 to reach the campus operator. Keep in mind, not all
994-prefix numbers are MSU numbers. If the 4-digit extension begins with a "0", you need to dial
9-994- and the 4-digit number. If this should be the case, you do need to have a phone that has
a Class of Service (NCOS) 1 or higher.
Local Calls - Enter 9 + the 7-digit number. This requires that your phone has a
Class of Service (NCOS) 1 or higher.
In State Long Distance Calls - Enter 8 + 1 + 406 + 7-digit number. It requires that
the phone have a Class of Service of 2 or higher.
Out-of-State Long Distance Calls - Enter 8 + 1 + area code + 7-digit number.
It requires that the phone have a Class of Service of 3 or higher.
University of Montana- You may call University of Montana locally. Simply enter
9 + 7-digit number. Your phone must have a Class of Service of 1 or higher.
International Calling - Enter 8 + 011 + country code + city code + number.
It requires that your phone have a Class of Service (NCOS) of 4.
Toll-Free Numbers - Enter 8 + 1 + 800, 866, 877, or 888 + 7-digit number. It requires
a Class of Service of 1 or higher.
Personal long distance calls are not to be made from a campus phone and be charged to that phone.
You may use a personal calling card, use third party billing, or call collect. MSU numbers cannot
be accepted for third party calling, nor can you accept a collect call.
Class of Service Codes (NCOS)
NCOS 0 - On campus calls only
NCOS 1 - On campus calls plus local and 800 calls
NCOS 2 - On campus calls plus local, 800 calls, and Intrastate calls
NCOS 3 - On campus calls, local, 800 calls, Intrastate calls, and Interstate
long distance calls
NCOS 4 - On campus calls, local calls, Intrastate calls, Interstate long
distance, and international calls. This includes Alaska, Hawaii, and Canada.
If you need the Class of Service changed on your phone, please contact your Telephone Coordinator
to complete a Telephone Network & Service Request form. If you
have further questions, please consult your Telephone Directory. You may also call Chris Bauer
