MSU BlackBerry Service-Getting Started

Montana State University BlackBerry Service

Getting Started

Before the Information Technology Center can activate your new BlackBerry device, you must have:

    1. A BlackBerry device in which the Information Technology Center has possession of. It must also have the most up-to-date operating system, such as v 4.1.
    2. A data plan purchased from your wireless service provider, such as Verizon Wireless or Alltel Wireless. You are not required to have a voice plan to use the BlackBerry.
    3. An Exchange account. This would be a “montana.edu” account. If you do not have an email account, please contact the Computer HelpDesk at extension 1777.

Step 1: Purchase a BlackBerry device through Verizon Wireless or Alltel Wireless

    1. Please contact Telephone Services, who will assist in completing the authorization form required in purchasing any cellular device/plan.
    2. Fax the Authorization Form to the fax number listed on the form. Make sure you have decided on your data and/or voice plan to coincide with your device.

Step 2: Activation of the BlackBerry

    1. Once you have decided on your plans and ordered the BlackBerry device, the BlackBerry device will be shipped to ITC-Telephone Services.
    2. Telephone Services will call you, asking you to log out of your email on your desktop. A message is sent from the server to the desktop that needs to stay in the inbox and is not to be filtered. We will notify you when you can log back into email.
    3. If you are porting an existing phone number to a BlackBerry device, we will contact you to verify that it is okay to deactivate the old phone. Once we activate the BlackBerry device, your old phone will no longer be working.
    4. Once we activate the BlackBerry device and verify it is working properly, Chris Bauer will contact you to arrange for pick up or delivery. You will receive several new emails from BlackBerry, including tips on how to use your new device.

Step 3: Practicing with your BlackBerry

We have found the easiest way to learn more about your BlackBerry is to practice with it. Practice moving from one icon to another, using shortcuts. If you experience any problems with the BlackBerry, please contact the Computer HelpDesk at extension 1777.
