The digit(s) which must be dialed to access features or trunks. |
| ACD - |
Automatic Call Distribution: A telephone system feature that allows
incoming calls to be automatically distributed among available "agent" telephones. It also
allows overflow calls to be placed in a queue, to be distributed to agents in the order in which
they were received (First In, First Out), with announcements to that effect. |
| Authorization Code - |
An identification number dialed when placing a call to flag the call for billing segregation. |
| Cable Pair - |
The wires that carry or run a telephone line. Each telephone needs two wires for its
circuit, which are twisted together into a pair and combined with other pairs to form a cable. |
| Carrier - |
A company providing telecommunications services. Examples are: Local Exchange Carrier
(LEC) or Long Distance Carrier (IEX, for Inter-Exchange Carrier) |
| CDR - |
Call Detail Record: The record of a call produced by the phone system,
containing the called number, calling number, route, time of day, and call duration. |
| Conduit - |
A tube or pipe that provides a protected passageway for running wire or cable. Usually
placed inside a wall, above a ceiling, or underground. |
| Cross-Connect - |
The wires or patch cable connecting a voice or data circuit through from one cable to
another. Cross-connects are usually found at cable terminals or patch panels. |
| DN - |
Directory Number: The telephone number associated with your telephone.
Sometimes referred to as your extension. |
| NCOS - |
Network Class of Service: This defines the long distance capabilities of
your phone on the telephone network:
- (0) - On-campus dialing only
- (1) - On-campus, local, and toll-free (800, etc.) calls
- (2) - All of the above, plus statewide long distance
- (3) - All of the above, plus U.S. long distance
- (4) - All of the above, plus International long distance (includes Canada, Mexico, Alaska, and the Caribbean)

| PBX - |
Private Branch Exchange: Also known as the "Switch". The telephone system
that runs the phones on campus. |
| Raceway - |
A type of conduit, usually rectangular, used for running wire or cable on the surface of a
wall. |
| Software - |
When used in relation to telephone service, this is the programming needed to give a
telephone specific features, such as transfer, conferencing, etc. Also known as "feature
programming". |
| TN - |
Terminal Number: The port "address" of a telephone line. A sequence of
numbers, which indicates the cabinet, shelf, and port. |
| TNSR - |
Telephone & Network Service Request. The form that is used
to request any moves, additions, or changes to telephone features, equipment, or network ports. This
form must be completed by the Telephone Coordinator of the department. |
