Mobile Communications Device Information

University employees whose job duties include the frequent need for a moble communications device may receive extra compensation in the form of a mobile communications device allowance to cover business-related use of their personally owed device and service plan.

Effective August 1, 2006, Montana State University has established a Mobile Communications Device Policy. You may review it online.

The allowance form can be found on the HR-Personell and Payroll Services forms website. The form is then sent to HR-Personnel & Payroll Services for approval. ITC-Telephone Services will be provided a copy so that contact information is available for emergency purposes only.

In some cases, the mobile communications device carrier will request a transfer of liability, or an assumption of responsibility. The carrier will complete the form and send it to the department that pays for the device currently, to sign. Samples of these forms are available for both Alltel and Verizon.

For a sample of the Alltel Assumption of Responsibility, click here.

For a sample of the Verizon Assumption of Responsibility, click here.

Alltel and Verizon Wireless continues to offer discounted rates to State employees.

  • Alltel information is available by simply clicking here.

  • Verizon Wireless information is available by clicking here.

  • MSU may, in some cases, purchase and own mobile communication devices to be assigned to groups (departments, laboratories, etc.) and which may be loaned temporarily to individual employees or be shared by groups of employees for specific business purposes. This may be done if and only if the personal use of those devices is strictly limited to essential personal calls.

The University, through its ITC Telephone Services will own and retain a certain number of mobile communications devices for short term rental, emergency use, or disaster response/recovery purposes. Call Silvia Harrington at extension 5050 to reserve one of these.

Additionally, mobile communications devices that are (1) assigned to groups or (2) required to conduct research projects and charged to contract/grant budgets, may be obtained through ITC Telephone Services.

For those authorized departments purchasing mobile communications devices and plans, you may use either Verizon Wireless or Alltel. If another carrier is desired, please call Telephone Services at extension 5050.
