Paul R. Lachapelle
Having completed his Ph.D. at the University of Montana's College of Forestry and Conservation in 2006, Paul joined the faculty of the Department of Political Science at Montana State University-Bozeman as an Assistant Professor with a split appointment in Extension. His doctoral research analyzed the social dynamics of trust and community "ownership" in wildfire protection planning (as prescribed by the Healthy Forest Restoration Act of 2003) with a case study approach focused in West-central Montana.
Paul has conducted research and taught in both Montana and internationally having served as a the Training Coordinator for the University of Montana's International Seminar on Protected Area Management convening park managers from around the world for this annual field-based program. Paul is also a former U.S. Fulbright Scholar and National Security Education Program recipient with nearly three years of applied research, development work and language training in Nepal. Other applied research and training projects include studies of Inuit land use and park visitation in several arctic national parks in the Canadian Territory of Nunavut, review and consultation of forest management and community development projects in Guinea, and analysis of the role of community governance and co-management in Kruger National Park, South Africa.
