2008 City/Town Council Workshops

The Montana Municipal Insurance Authority and the MSU Local Government Center developed these workshops in response to continuing turnover of City Council members and the increase in inquiries about the position. The purpose of these workshops is to introduce key elements in the public process and provide a forum for elected officials to gain knowledge of and inquire about issues pertinent to their position in local government. The workshops are designed for both newly elected and experienced City Council members. While Mayors may also attend, we encourage Mayors to attend the 2008 Mayors Academy.

Registration

Download a registration packet by clicking here (PDF 190KB). Fax or mail the completed registration form to us at 406-994-1905 (fax) or MSU Local Government Center, PO Box 172240, Bozeman, Montana 59717.

Agenda

The proposed agenda for the workshops is as follows:

  1. Introduction to Municipal Government
    1. Forms of Government
    2. Roles and Responsibilities of City Council Members
    3. Goal Setting and Strategic Planning
  2. Montana’s Open Meeting Laws and Ex Parte Communication
  3. Ethics, Conflict of Interest and Code of Conduct
  4. Conduct of Council Meetings
  5. Open Discussion

How much does it cost?

There will be a charge of $450 per workshop, plus travel costs at a state rate to cover our expenses. This fee is per workshop, regardless of the number of participants. Participating cities and towns will be asked to work out how they will share costs amongst themselves.
