Multimedia Language Resource Center Our lab is a cutting-edge, digital-based multimedia language resource center. We have 25 student stations equipped with Pentium III computers that
permit direct access to the Internet's rich resource of foreign language Web pages. Teachers also
have the potential to access and distribute CD audio, DVD, VCR-based and satellite teaching materials.
Lessons recorded in the center can be worked on later by the students. The state-of-the-art equipment
permits the teacher to access and distribute a variety of audio and video teaching materials,
administer tests, view the students' screens, and talk directly with students individually or in
groups. Our facility allows language instructors to enrich student language acquisition with drills in
which students may compare their spoken statements to those of a native speaker. Visual as well as
audio feedback guides both the student and the instructor in correction of specific problems of
student's speech production. Among the most popular features of the new equipment is its ability to
randomly pair students, allowing them to carry on "telephone" conversations in the foreign language.
Other features permit the student to view foreign language television programs via satellite,
pre-recorded foreign language films in both VHS and DVD formats, interactive CD- ROM programs created
for language acquisition, and of course the rich variety of foreign language material found on the
Internet including radio, television and newspaper Web pages. The instructor's master console is linked to the student workstations in a local area network
allowing the instructor to monitor and communicate with individual students, groups, or an entire
class. When necessary, the instructor can control the student's screen and keyboard. The Modern
Languages & Literatures faculty are quite excited by the new dimension that this innovative language
resource center will add to the instruction of foreign languages here at MSU-Bozeman.
