Space Food

Storing Food in Space

All of the food astronauts need for their trip must be stored on the Space Shuttle. But the Shuttle has little room and cannot lift off with too much weight. So, the water is taken out of some foods. This is called dehydration. The foods then take up less room and weigh less. Fuel cells on the Shuttle make water as a by-product, so astronauts use this water to rehydrate (add water) their food before eating.

Mission:

Learn why astronauts take dehydrated food with them in space.

Experiment:

Step 1.
Weigh the two eggs on the scale in front of you. How much do they weigh?

Step 2.
Now weigh the dehydrated scrambled egg package. How much does this packet weigh?

Step 3.
Repeat steps 1 and 2 for the other natural and dehydrated foods.

Theorize:

  1. If you were an astronaut, which foods would you take with you in space?
  2. Have you ever eaten dehydrated foods on Earth?
