Excercising in Space

Excercising in Space

In space, astronauts are in "free-fall" and the normal effects of gravity are absent. Without the resistance that gravity provides on Earth, astronauts' muscles can get weak. Because of this, astronauts must exercise on a treadmill or ride a stationary bike every day while in space. Astronauts also do resistance training with elastic bands to maintain muscle strength.

Mission:

Learn about resistance training with the elastic bands that astronauts use in space.

Experiment #1

Step 1.
Hold the Thera-Band® with both hands in front of your body.

Step 2.
Pull your hands away from each other, stretching the band across your chest.

Step 3.
Do this 10 times.

Theorize:

  1. Can you feel resistance?
  2. Can you think of other exercises you could do with the Thera-Band® for other parts of your body?
