The mass of an object is the amount of matter packed into it. All objects in the universe have mass. Weight is determined by an object's mass and how much gravity is pulling on that mass. Heavy objects have lots of mass. Light objects have less mass.

Mission: Learn about weight and mass.

Experiment:

Step 1.
Pick up the red and blue blocks. Put one in each hand.

Step 2.
Ask yourself, do these blocks have the same mass? Let's find out.

Step 3.
Put the red block on one side of the scale and the blue block on the other side of the scale. What happens to the scale?

Step 4.
Take the blue block off the scale and replace it with the four smaller green blocks. What happens to the scale?

Step 5.
Take two green blocks off the scale. What happens to the scale now?

Theorize:

A. Do the big red and big blue blocks weigh the same?
B. Do the big red and big blue blocks have the same amount of mass?
C. Does the big red block weigh the same as four small green blocks?
D. Does the big red block have the same amount of mass as four small green blocks?
E. Does the big red block weigh the same as two small green blocks?
F. Does the big red block have the same amount of mass as two small green blocks?
