Experiment:

Step 1.
Lift the first ball away from the other balls and release the ball.

Step 2.
Watch what happens!

What is the Action?

Action is the first ball striking the string of balls. Once the first ball is released, gravity pulls it toward the other balls. The energy of the ball's motion is transfered through the string of balls to the last ball.

What is the Reaction?

Reaction is the energy transfer to the last ball, which swings up. This, in turn, sets up another action- reaction series until the initial energy is dissipated by friction.

Theorize:

  1. What happens when you let go of the first ball?
  2. What would happen if you lifted the first ball higher? Not so high?
  3. What happens when you release more than one ball together?
