In 1945 NP&I 4, ex-NP 684, was shoved off the end of a spur at Nez Perce and forgotten.
Few railroaders knew of her existence. Then in 1948 an appeal was made to Northern Pacific
to repurchase the engine and restore her. Three years later this was accomplished, On May 21,
1951 General Foreman Herb Banks of Lewiston and his crew spent 16 hours rerailing 684 and
putting her in condition to be towed to Spokane. It was a hectic day, and particularly hectic
the following day when the Nez Perce crew hauled 684 to Craigmont without the driving journals
being greased. The trip down the 3 1/2% Camas Prairie line May 24 was no picnic. At Lewiston
684 was given more attention before being hauled to Spokane for reconditioning.
The photo shows Nez Perce 9, an ancient Prairie type with a colorful background, pulling 684 into Craigmont May 22, 1951. |
