This photo was made at Athol, Idaho, on September 24, 1965. 684 was reconditioned with
painstaking effort to restore it to its original state. Old blueprints and photographs
were used, and it is altogether possible that 684 is the most authentic of all Standards
that have been preserved. As David Morgan, editor of Trains Magazine said, "Unlike many
old-timers, this one is strictly legitimate." The General and William Crooks were rebuilt
after a fire; New York Central 999 was rebuilt with low drive wheels so that it hardly
resembled the original. Many older engines have been equipped with enormous stacks and
innovations purely the imagination of individuals. But 684 looks as it did when highballing
the varnish.
The 684 has been featured in True Magazine and dozens of other publications. It has been exhibited at many points on the system, and instead of being tied to one location it is available -for exhibition anywhere. |
