Class M (1-2) 2-10-0 Decapod. Total built 2. Baldwin Locomotive Works, 1886.

NP had only two 2-10-0 Decapods, but when built they were the largest and heaviest locomotives in the world, a distinction which NP again held fifty years later. Originally Nos. 500 and 501, it is said they were designed to haul trains on the steep temporary track over the Cascades before completion of Stampede Tunnel. Afterward they were in mountain freight service, then on the Camas Prairie. Later they were used as switchers in Spokane, Tacoma and Hoquiam.

No. 2 was photographed at Tacoma on April 10, 1932.
