Class S-4 ten-wheelers were very successful and efficient locomotives.
They never worked east of Livingston but were in service on the western
district until coming of the diesels. All were Vauclain compounds to begin
with but were converted to simple in 1916 and 1917.
The 1903 photo of 1356 shows how it appeared when in passenger service between Missoula and Spokane the year after is was built. She was assigned to Missoula after the Pacifics arrived and was used in every type of work. 1356 has handled fast passenger trains and 100-car freight trains. |
