Class 3-4 (1350-1389) 4-6-0 Ten-wheeler. Total built 40. Baldwin Locomotive Works, 1902.

For a long time 1356 worked on the Coeur d'Alene Branch between Missoula and Wallace and was one of the engines that made history by evacuating people in the Wallace area during the disastrous forest fires of 1910. There was service on local freights between Missoula, Polson, Darby, Philipsburg and Butte. Repaired after turning over in the Bitter Root River in 1943, 1356 continued to work out of Missoula until June 16, 1954 when she made her last trip helping No. 1 to Evaro. On April 14, 1955 she was sent to South Tacoma for dismantling.

In the meantime NP decided to donate a locomotive to the city of Missoula. No better choice than 1356 could have been made. She was jerked out of the South Tacoma deadline, overhauled and brought back to Missoula for permanent display. The photo shows 1356 on the day she was moved to her present location, October 20, 1955.
