Class K-1 (948-976) 0-6-0 Switcher. Total built 29. Baldwin Locomotive Works, 1881-1882.

All K-1 engines were formerly 2-6-0 moguls and were rebuilt to switchers when they proved unsatisfactory on the road. Most of them worked on the western district and nearly all were scrapped before 1920.

The 137, later 970, was photographed at Tacoma in 1896. The fireman in the white suit, R.. B. Morrow, was the inventor of the Cyclone Spark Arrester which has been used almost universally on coal burning engines. Sparks were practically eliminated by a whirling and grinding device which not only reduced fire hazards but improved the draft.
