Class V (7-9) Shay. Total built 3. Lima Locomotive Works, 1903.

Very few Class I railroads owned Shay locomotives. They were limited mostly to
logging roads and short lines. Maximum speed was only 15 to 20 miles per hour,
but being geared, their drawbar pull was tremendous.
NP owned three, but not much of their history is known. The photo of No. 9 made at Yacolt, Wash. about 1905 came from the late Don Roberts of Portland. |
