Page #85 - Ron Nixon's Northern Pacific Locomotives

Class W (1500-1659) 2-8-2 Mikado. Total built 160. Brooks Works,
American Locomotive Co., 1904-1907.

Largest group of one class was the W Mikado. These engines paid for themselves many times, having worked in all types of service over the entire system and until the diesels came.

1529 was NP's first oil burner. This conversion was made for the benefit of Yellowstone Park passengers riding open observation cars between Livingston and Gardiner. Cinders previously ruined the ride. The photo was made at Gardiner, September 7, 1940. Electric Peak, 11,155 feet above sea level and one of Yellowstone Park's highest, is directly in the background. Mount Sepulchre is at the left.
