Class S-10 (320-329) 4-6-0 Ten-wheeler. Total built 10. Rogers Works,

In 1907 the South Manchurian Railways ordered ten top-heavy, lowwheeled ten-wheelers
from the American Locomotive Co. After the engines were built the order was canceled
and they were eventually purchased by NP for use on mixed runs and branch lines. The
321 and 328 were kept at St. Paul for the Stillwater, Taylors Fails and Grantsburg runs.
The 325 and 326 were assigned to the Pony and Norris runs in Montana; the others went
to North Dakota.
The S-10s could not run fast or pull much but they could negotiate sharp curves, cross light bridges, and could even be turned by manpower on "Armstrong" turntables. The photo shows 328 being turned by hand at Grantsburg, Wisconsin, April 7, 1950. Note the complete unconcern of the engineer as the remainder of the crew strains to push nearly 100 tons! Engine 328 was donated to the city of Stillwater, Minn., and it was placed on permanent exhibition September 25, 1955. |
