High School Teacher Program (PDF brochure)
This new, two-summer program was made possible by a grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.
In the first summer, successful applicants will spend 10 weeks in the laboratory of one of the Institute's faculty actively engaged in research. In addition to providing hands-on experience in investigational science, participating teachers will observe and interact with high school and college students in laboratory, rather than classroom, learning environments. Workshops, journal clubs, and seminars supplement the research experience.
In the second summer of the program, teachers will work with peers on educational issues, development of new teaching tools, and mentoring high school students entertaining the possibility of science teaching as a career. Ms. Josy McLean of C.M. Russell High School leads this portion of the program. Interaction with education professionals at Montana's Universities and at the Institute for Systems Biology in Seattle adds to the experience. An additional goal for the teachers is to identify strong science students with the potential to become good teachers in their freshman and sophomore years and guide them on the impacts of course choices on career options. It is possible to obtain continuing education credits or experience towards a degree.
Teachers have the opportunity to continue their interaction with Institute faculty and staff throughout the academic year. Seminars aimed at improving scientific literacy and public support for science education provide continuity with the summer program.
Stipends are paid to all participants to minimize financial barriers to participation.
To apply, send a one to two page letter describing your interests and educational philosophy, along with a curriculum vitae, before March 15 to:

High School Student Program (PDF brochure)
The program runs for 10 weeks from June through August; students work on current research projects under the direction of the faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and research assistants, culminating in a formal presentation of each individual's project.
While most of our high school student interns have gone on to careers in research or medicine after a single summer, we now offer a second summer internship for high-school students considering science teaching as a career. The second summer will involve collaborations with teachers and other students to develop innovative projects in science education. In addition to those interested in K-12 teaching careers, this program can benefit anyone interested in a science career.
Students in the junior or senior year in high school are eligible. Students should be on track for four years of math, biology, chemistry and/or physics. Stipends are paid to all participants.
To apply, send a letter of application highlighting your interest in science, a resume, transcripts, ACT or SAT scores, and two letters of recommendation (in sealed envelopes signed across the flap), preferably from instructors in the scientific disciplines. Only students committed to participating for the full 10 weeks should apply. Applications should received by March 15 at the following address:

Undergraduate Research Program
The Institute offers opportunities for college students to gain first hand experience in research laboratory, contributing to projects at the forefront of scientific endeavor. This opportunity is open to talented individuals who aspire to careers in science including research, medicine, allied health professions, or teaching.
The program runs for 10 weeks from June through August where students work on current research projects under the direction of the scientists, postdoctoral fellows, and research assistants culminating in a formal presentation of each individual's project.
Stipends are paid to all participants. The size of the stipend is relatively small relative to the educational experience. The application package should include a letter of application, a resume or cv highlighting any laboratory experience, transcripts, and two letters of recommendation, preferably from instructors in the science disciplines. Only students able to participate in the full 10 week program should apply. Applications should be received by March 15 at the following address:
