The Science Olympiad goals are accomplished through the dedication of Montana Science teachers and parents who organize classroom activities, research, and after school training clubs. The main focus of our competition is to elevate science education and learning to a high level of enthusiasm and support. This is a great opportunity for students who excel in academics to participate in a team event and to have the fun of traveling.
Josh Burnim, Montana Science Olympiad State Coordinator, was excited to have a special focus on the Science of Alternative Vehicles and Alternative Fuels. Science Olympiad participants and visitors were able to visit presentations by: Ron Gompertz, owner of Eco-Auto's zero emission electric car called "The Zenn"; Wiley Davis' electric-assist bicycle; Bozeman's Streamline Bus system using a blend of 20% biodiesel; Joel Lindstrom from Leonardo Technologies featuring a generator fueled with camelina oil grown and pressed at the Flying D Buffalo Ranch in Gallatin County; MSU Engineering Graduate Student, Kylan Engelke's talk about their fuel delivery system that breaks vegetable oil or diesel fuel into hydrogen gas and carbon monoxide for more efficient fuel delivery; Joel Schumacher, MSU's Extention Economic Associate Specialist and James Brown, MSU Economics Student, discussed with students the opportunities and markets for biodiesel and other products made from oilseeds grown in Montana.
